Too Many Majors
ANSWER:
Dear Too Many Majors:
In todays society, the average person holds 7-10 different occupations in his or her lifetime. Your grandparents may have needed to find the perfect career that they would do for 40 some years, but you dont have that pressure on you. You only need to figure out which area you will start out in since more than likely, you will change your career or at least consider changing many times throughout your lifetime. You also need not worry about finding the perfect career because the fact is, there is no such thing as a perfect career. You ask what area Uncle Sigmund thinks is best. Well, obviously to Uncle, psychology is best. Thats because Uncle likes working with people and understanding what makes them tick. Uncle Sigmund is good at listening and questioning people and Uncle values helping others. For Uncle, psychology is not perfect but it is a good fit. If you want to figure out which area would be a good fit for you, you should first consider what you like, what you are good at, and what is important to you. The Peer Career Center is a great place to start this process of learning about yourself and learning what careers fit with you. They are generally open 10-5 Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; 10-7 Wednesday, and 10-12 Friday. You dont need an appointment so just stop by when you have an hour or so to get started. Best wishes to you for a long and satisfying career!
